十月十四日（火）かなり疲れてゐても年寄りは四時間くらゐの睡眠で未明に目が覚めちまひ、しかも昼間に睡眠不足で眠くならないから不思議。若い頃なら「願ッたり叶ッたり」の効率の良さだが年寄りは体力がどうしたッて落ちる分、省エネ型になり睡眠も要らなくなるのかしら。早朝にドサッと届いた新聞を読む。Paul Krugman氏ノーベル経済学賞受賞でIHT紙＝紐育時報こそ大きく記事にしさうだが一面トップはタイの都市と農村貧富格差を取り上げ、紐育との時差もあるがPK氏の受賞はIHT紙の今朝の版には記事にもならず粛々とでも言はうか、いつものやうにPK氏の連載論説記事で今朝は“Gordon Does Good”が掲載されてゐるのが寧ろとてもスマート。蘋果日報はさすが余裕で昨晩香港時間七時だかに発表になつた、この受賞を１面全面で報道し、内側紙面でも１面割いて前述の紐育時報の“Gordon Does Good”を英語と中文翻訳で掲載。FT紙はこれを１面記事から伝へ社説の“Why Mr Krugman deserves his Nobel”は秀逸。「通常のノーベル賞受賞者が発表されると「それッて誰？」だが昨日は違つた。ニューヨークタイムズのポール＝クルーグマンはミルトン＝フリードマンのやうに、最も知られた受賞者だつた」との書き出しで
There is truth in that. While his criticisms of the Bush administration’s woeful policies have tended to ring all too true, his rage can diminish the persuasiveness of his argument. In any case, many journalists can shoot the fish in that particular barrel, but only one economist can pen a whimsical “theory of interstellar trade”. Even when the polemicist is at the top of his game, the witty populariser of economic logic is occasionally missed.
It is not too late for Paul Krugman to return to what he does best: explaining how the economy works, why it matters, and what wrong-headed policies can do to it. In fact, that change may soon come. If so, it will not be because of the Nobel prize, but because the Republicans no longer hold the White House. An Obama presidency might persuade Mr Krugman that his services on the political front line are no longer so urgently needed.
Slogans and polemics matter. So, too, do models and data. Paul Krugman is a master of them all. We congratulate him.
と氏の徹底した姿勢に賛辞を惜しまず。ところでHSBCの華人筆頭のExecutive DirectorのPeter Wong氏が或るセミナーで聴衆相手に語つた言葉。「昨年、一人の学生が私にどう投資戦略を立てれば良いか、と尋ねた時に言つたことは「自分自身に投資すること」が最良なのだ」と（SCMPのLai See欄）。御意。本日はまた一つ想定外の某事あり。来春まで本当に忙しくなりさう。晩にＡ氏、Ｎ氏と城市花園の「自然や」に食す。二更に十六夜の月を愛でつゝ家路に着く。
