五月四日（金）夕方、銀行であたしの口座担当者と雑談。今日は眼帯をしていたが香港でも眼帯をしていると混雑した街中でもけっこう気にして道を避けたりしてくれる人は少なからず。外国人記者倶楽部のバーでドライマティーニ三杯。晩に尖沙咀東。Royal Garden Hotelの東来順で広州在住で今日はタイからの旅行帰りのＯ君家族、それに夕方偶然に電話をもらったＫ氏も誘い、Ｚ嬢も来てしゃぶしゃぶ。葡萄酒は智利のヴィーニャ＝セグーというワイナリーのDo?a Consueloのソーヴィニヨン・ブラン05年と山西省の怡園の赤を二本。Ｏ君の息子のカブトムシの組立玩具が精巧でついつい制作に夢中になってしまった。Ｏ君の家族だけは近隣のホテルに戻り、このホテルのＧ階にあるMatini Barで食後に歓談。バーで晩の十時くらいに幼い子ども二人連れた米国人夫婦。子どもがバーの中を走り回る。更に銅鑼湾に渡りバーＳでシングルモルト飲む。Mortlachの1949年蒸留で2001年に瓶詰めされたモルトが１本あり、バーＳの開店三周年で今月から開栓できると言われていたが、まだ栓は開けられておらず。どうせだから、と開けてもらいショットに一杯だけ賞味。もっと重たい酒を想像したが香りが見事で実際に飲むととてもスムースなモルトであった。
▼本晩参加能わず、であったが中央図書館にて英国王立アジア協会香港支部の講演会でDick Irving氏が“Almost Forgotten Aspects of the Dragon Boat Festival in the North-west New Territories”という演題で講演。Dick Irving氏といえば1985年から十年間、香港大学の地理学科の講師。日本の「中山道」をライフワークの如く研究テーマとされていたが、香港を離れて何処へ？と思えば関西学院大学で教鞭をとられている由。香港から何度か好事家を集め中山道を歩くツアーも企画。そのDick先生が香港に戻り今回、端午の節句に合わせドラゴンボートについて。（以下、引用）
Dick’s research interest in Hong Kong was rekindled recently with the saga of an estuarine crocodile ‘infesting’ the marshlands near Mai Po. He recalled an earlier notion he had conceived ? that the origins of the Dragon Boat Festival in southern China lay in the fact that these sleek boats were originally designed to chase down troublesome crocodiles in the local waters. Whilst still holding this notion to be true, his main concern on this occasion is with the nature and significance of the Festival as it used to be celebrated in the north-west New Territories. Following a post-war revival, depopulation, land reclamation, and events in the mainland all combined to bring about the eventual demise of the Festival in this area in the late 1940s. Today only a handful of former participants survive to recall the memories they share of this event.
The Festival then was very different to the rather synthetic version of dragon boat racing we see today. Extending over a number of days, when tides were highest during the first week or so of the fifth lunar month, the ‘races’ were not just an opportunity to display village prowess but also to resolve inter-village disputes, or re-establish friendships. The size of the boats varied according to the status and wealth of the thirty or so village communities who regularly participated, so competition was never even. Rather, the Festival resembled a mere procession of boats from township to township, with rivalries being settled out of sight of the crowds who would assemble to greet their male relatives from more distant communities.
